DEFINITION OF INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

According to Wikipedia, Instructional Design “is the practice of creating ‘instructional experiences which make the acquisition of knowledge and skill more efficient, effective, and appealing’” (Wikipedia, 2016). My own definition of Instructional Design is a process of analyzing learners’ needs in order to design, develop and deliver material effectively to maximize learning.

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN MODELS

ADDIE Model

  1. Analysis:

    • Instructional problem is identified​

    • Establishment of instructional goals, success metrics and overall objectives

  2. Design:

    • Based on analysis create learning objectives, instructional methods, storyboards, lesson outlines, etc.  

  3. Development:

    • Where everything from design phase comes to life​

    • Creation of content and activities planned in the design phase (graphics, audio, video, photography, etc.)

  4. Implementation:

    • Delivery of content and activities developed to audience

  5. ​Evaluation:​​​​

    • assess​ if product was effective, make necessary changes

    • Formative assessment:​ throughout the design and development processes

    • Summative assessment: done after material is delivered

Gagné's 9 Events of Instruction

  1. Gain Attention:

    • give information that will spark the interest of learner's​

  2. Inform Learner of Objectives:

    • list learning objectives that convey what they will gain​

  3. Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning:

    • help learners connect new knowledge with old knowledge

  4. Present Content:

    • deliver learning material​

  5. Provide Learner Guidance:

    • help learners during learning process

  6. Elicit Performance:

    • help learners apply new knowledge​

  7. Provide Feedback:

    • detailed formative feedback of strengths and weaknesses​

  8. Assess Performance:

    • assessment of overall progress and effectiveness of training​

  9. Enhance Retention and Transfer:

    • provide the opportunity for learners to apply knowledge to real life scenerios​
